What happened in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921? A mob of 10,000 whites descended on Greenwood, the richest black neighborhood in America, after a black teenager o. Saturday’s Juneteenth event won’t be quite as big a production, in large part because of the need for social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic. Juneteenth (a portmanteau of June and nineteenth) – also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States, with varying official recognition. Jefferson City's Juneteenth Heritage Festival is the last in a string of Juneteenth-related events. On this day, the court of the Little Mr. And Miss Juneteenth pageant will take the stage, and the Juneteenth's Got Talent winners will perform.   • Juneteenth the Play (Virtual): Juneteenth stage play is a story of how love, faith, and prayer between a Texas slave-women name Tippy and a Texas slave man named Henry sustained them through slavery, even for the additional two and a half years that Texas kept their slaves. Event begins at 8:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, June 20.
  • Juneteenth Peace Walk (Indianapolis): A community peace walk from from Mass Ave. to Kennedy-King Park. Assembly begins at 12 p.m. ET, Friday June 19, and the walk will begin at 1 p.m.
  • Freedom Day Freedom Ride (Dallas): A community bike ride celebrating Juneteenth and Black lives. Ride will begin at 6 p.m. CT, Friday, June 19 at 4466 S. Marsalis Ave.

June 19 is Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when Union general Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free.

  • In many ways, Juneteenth represents how freedom and justice in the US has always been delayed for black people. (Vox)

  • Juneteenth is an important part of Black culture, especially in the South. This is a holiday to celebrate creating community, building a culture and overcoming adversity.

  • American history is still divided over whether or not the Civil War was over states’ rights or slavery. Juneteenth gives everyone a chance to empathize and understand the perspective of the enslaved in the Confederate states.

  • As more people begin to understand that the trauma of slavery goes back more than 400 years, Juneteenth is an important holiday to remember the end of slavery and the beginning of the journey for equality and equity for Black people.
